In the village of Digan, south of Bamako, the capital city of Mali, the town elders are meeting with a representative of a private voluntary organization to discuss possible self-help projects. Without prompting, two women opening join in and express what the village women believe are the village's priorities. This active participation by women might be unusual in some villages in West Africa, but not in the Ouelessebougou Arrondissement.
