Experts believe the threat of an influenza pandemic is the highest it has been since the 1968 pandemic.1 The current outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 began circulating in 2003 and has been groundbreaking in its scale and virulence. The virus has spread throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, causing economic devastation. Since 2004, over 209 million poultry have either died or been culled to stop the spread of the virus. As of December 2008, there have been 390 human cases and 246 deaths in more than a dozen countries.
