Promoting peace and reconciliation: Radio programming project in Timbuktu region

Abstract

The Northern Mali Peace and Reconciliation Project, supported with a $20,000 grant from the Greenville Foundation has helped to promote peace through radio programming in Northern Mali and is positive proof that small projects can bring large results. The project was implemented from October 2000 to March 2001 by the US-based Volunteers in Technical Assistance (VITA) in collaboration with the Malian umbrella non-government organization Comité de Coordination des Actions des Organisations Non- Gouvernementales au Mali (CCA-ONG) and in association with the Union des Radios et Télévisions Libres (URTEL). This six-month activity has contributed to the significant conflict reduction in the Timbuktu Region of Mali and left participating stations with mechanisms and a mission to promote peace and reconciliation.
