RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Anthony Hickey, Ph.D., distinguished fellow and senior research pharmacologist at RTI International, has been selected to receive the Research Achievement Award from the Division of Particulate Preparations and Design of the Society of Powder Technology, Japan.
The award will be presented at the Symposium of Particulate Design and Pharmaceutical Preparation in Toyohashi, Japan, October 25-26.
Hickey, who joined RTI in 2011, has more than 30 years of academic and research experience in the areas of pulmonary biology, aerosol physics, powder dynamics, pharmacokinetics and drug disposition, formulation design, and device development. His research has focused on improving understanding of the physiology, pharmacology and immunology of the lungs.
Throughout his career, Hickey has worked on intranasal and inhaled vaccine development and drug delivery for diseases affecting the respiratory tract, including asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis. He has also studied the performance of powders and particles required to ensure the performance of drug and vaccine delivery systems.
In addition to his position at RTI, Hickey is an adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and founder and president of Cirrus Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
He is also an emeritus professor of molecular pharmaceutics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy and served as the director of graduate studies at the school from 2004 to 2008.
Hickey has received many awards and honors and is an active member of several professional societies and committees. He is a fellow of the Society of Biology, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He holds 21 patents and has authored numerous books, book chapters and more than 160 journal articles.
Hickey has a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Aston in Birmingham, a master's degree in toxicology from the University of Birmingham and a bachelor's degree in biology from Portsmouth Polytechnic.
The Society of Powder Technology, Japan was formed in 1957 to promote engineering research and development dealing with powders or particulate materials. The Division of Particulate Preparations and Design facilitates particle design research related to pharmaceutical technology.
