Stephen Mayfield is a research education analyst at RTI. He is an expert in conducting postsecondary education research using quantitative methods, data and project management, and workflow automation. Dr. Mayfield primarily works on postsecondary education surveys and datasets conducted on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. 

Dr. Mayfield’s current projects include the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS), the Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) longitudinal study, and the Annual Reports and Information Staff (ARIS) contract. Across these projects, he manages nationally representative data, develops specifications for derived variables, handles external data requests, leads tasks, automates workflows, and conducts empirical research. 

Prior to joining RTI in 2022, Dr. Mayfield worked as Assistant Director of Foundation Relations at a public liberal arts college and as Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at a public technical college. He is skilled in the following applications: Stata, Python, Jira, SmartSheet, Excel Scripts, VBA, LaTex, and Batch/Shell Scripts.
