Mike Enger is a clinical research informaticist with extensive experience supporting data coordinating centers for large, multi-site research consortia funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He leverages his multidisciplinary background to collaborate with clinicians, investigators, software developers, and data scientists to translate complex research needs into actionable solutions. Mike’s research focuses on maximizing the utility of routinely collected health information for research applications.

His recent work has focused on standardizing data collection and streamlining research workflows. This includes leading working groups to establish disease-specific common data elements (CDEs) and developing open-source harmonization workflows for data ingestion to platforms like NIH’s BioData Catalyst. Mike also coordinates the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Coordinating Committee of NIH’s RECOVER (Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery) Initiative, which aims to leverage real-world data to identify effective strategies for the treatment of long COVID. In addition, he is the informaticist and data manager for the Data Management and Coordinating Center of the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Collaborative Research Network. In this role, he has assisted in the development of the public data-sharing portal (mapMECFS), providing users access to research results across many scientific disciplines and body systems.

Mike specializes in the curation and harmonization of EHR data, and his expertise spans the entire data lifecycle—from entry and abstraction to processing, management, and integration. Drawing on his prior clinical experience and training in informatics, Mike has a deep understanding of data challenges at every stage. He is also proficient in clinical vocabularies and standards such as CPT, ICD, LOINC, USCDI, and SNOMED-CT.
