Dr. Kristin Stainbrook is a senior justice and behavioral health researcher who has extensive experience designing and conducting program evaluations of behavioral health interventions in the areas of community-based crisis response, jail diversion, jail-based treatment, re-entry programming, and for persons experiencing homelessness. She has led complex multi-component projects sponsored by federal agencies, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).

Dr. Stainbrook currently serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) for two evaluations of programs designed to provide alternative responses for behavioral health and quality of life-related 911 calls for service: a NIJ-funded evaluation of the Harris Center Crisis Call Diversion Program and an Arnold Venture funded study of programs in Durham and Greensboro, North Carolina. She also serves as the qualitative lead for an evaluation of an evidence-based re-entry intervention.

Prior to joining RTI in 2021, Dr. Stainbrook served as Deputy Director of Research at Advocates for Human Potential. During her tenure, she led numerous single and multi-site evaluations of programs serving individuals with mental health and trauma-related disorders, substance use disorders, and/or co-occurring disorders who are at risk of, or involved with, the criminal legal system.
