Cognitive biases influence how we think and act. With so much happening around us our brain attempts to simplify information processing which leads to faulty decision making. This highly interactive session explores multiple types of cognitive biases that affect everyday decision making in work with colleagues and students and how we respond to data and school culture. Through a review of research, analysis of scenarios, discussions and thoughtful reflections, strategies for recognizing and combating cognitive bias will be shared.
By the end of the session, participants will
- Define and discuss types of cognitive biases (confirmation bias, information bias, availability heuristic)
- Analyze scenarios that are impacted by cognitive biases
- Practice and create strategies for recognizing and combating cognitive biases
