Join us at the 2023 Overcoming Racism conference, organized and created by the volunteers of the Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative (FREC). This year's theme is Reclaiming History and Paying What’s Due. The theme focuses on two distinct and related topics:
- Historical Recovery - reclaiming movements, strategies, approaches from the past that could be useful in our current work—if they were known
- Paying What’s Due to those harmed by oppressive acts sanctioned by government and every other sector in our society in which primarily Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities were stripped of their land, rights and ability to create generational wealth. Black and Indigenous people also experienced cultural genocide, of which the after effects are still felt today.
Join us for the following workshop: Racial Equity Backlash: The Past Informs the Present
Saturday, November 11, 2023
Speakers: Cara Valentino and Kendra Pressley
This interactive workshop will provide insight into the historical and persistent nature of racial equity backlash, provide actionable strategies to address backlash, as well as tips to have impactful conversations on this challenging and potentially overwhelming topic. There is a centuries old pattern of backlash against gains by the Black community; understanding how this pattern informs current backlash efforts is key to informing the future. Equally important to understanding the pattern is understanding of the impacts to movements and individual activists. Interactive components of the workshop include an opportunity to role-play a conversation with someone against racial equity efforts, and group-solution concerns about addressing current backlash. Attend this 90-minute workshop to learn tips and strategies for framing discussions, engaging allies and the equity-curious, and taking impactful action in your organizations.
