The pair of senior advisers bring additional expertise in analytics and data democratization
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, today announced the addition of two new Visiting Fellows, Nancy Potok, Ph.D., and Julia Lane, Ph.D., for a one-year term through July 2024.
The pair will serve in senior advisory roles to the RTI Fellow Program and lend their extensive expertise to RTI proposals while also authoring scientific publications and representing the institute at conferences and in the scientific community.
“Nancy and Julia’s distinguished achievements will enhance our analytics and data democratization portfolio,” said Craig Hill, Ph.D., RTI senior vice president, science. “In an increasingly data driven world, it is critical to advance the methods for moving data strategy forward and ensure that data are available to drive decisions at every level. We are honored to have them both join us as Visiting Fellows to help expand RTI’s impact in this space.”
Potok has more than 30 years of experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. She serves on an American Statistical Association (ASA) study team developing metrics to assess the health of federal statistical agencies and is a Fellow at the American Statistical Association and the National Academy of Public Administration, a SAGE at the Partnership for Public Service and a Senior Fellow at The George Washington University. Potok previously served as the chief statistician of the U.S. in the Executive Office of the President, deputy director and COO of the U.S. Census Bureau, deputy under secretary for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Department of Commerce, COO of McManis & Monsalve Associates and senior vice president of NORC at the University of Chicago. She served as a commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking and currently chairs and serves on several boards.
Potok is the recipient of numerous awards and earned her Ph.D. at the Trachtenburg School of Public Administration and Public Policy at The George Washington University.
Lane has more than 30 years of experience in policy related to science and innovation as well as the development and analysis of large-scale databases. She is a professor at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. She was a senior advisor in the Office of the Federal CIO at the White House, supporting the implementation of the federal data strategy. Lane recently served on the Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building and the National AI Research Resources Task Force. She is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Statistical Institute and the American Statistical Association.
Lane is the recipient of multiple awards and holds a Ph.D. in economics and a master’s degree in statistics. Lane authored the book “Democratizing our Data: A Manifesto,” published by MIT Press.
