Gayle Bieler, Director of the Center for Data Science at RTI International, Awarded the NC ASA Senior Statistician Award

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Statistical Association has recognized Gayle Bieler, Senior Director of the Center for Data Science at RTI International (RTI), a nonprofit research institute, as the recipient of the 2020 NC ASA Senior Statistician Award. The award recognizes Senior Statisticians for their outstanding contributions to the theory and practice of statistics, particularly for their roles in the development of the subject in North Carolina.

Bieler was honored for her commitment and accomplishments to statistics, from her work with the development of SUDAAN®, RTI’s commercial statistical software package for analyzing complex survey data, to being the founding director of RTI’s Center for Data Science, which just celebrated its sixth anniversary.

According to colleagues, Bieler possesses a rare blend of methodological expertise, entrepreneurship, and team leadership. Not only does her team provide innovative and customized solutions using cutting edge technologies to meet a vast array of customer problems, but they also have a reputation of being a pleasure to work with, which is a credit to the culture she has built. Under her guidance, the Center has solved problems of national importance, improved our local communities, and contributed to the digital transformation of research.  They have also contributed to the rapidly evolving discipline of data science itself, through the creation of open-source software projects and numerous peer-reviewed papers and presentations.

Bieler is a dynamic leader whose enthusiasm for new methods and applications, for people and team building, and her commitment to data science for social good make her an excellent recipient of this award.
