At 12th InWomen’s Conference, Researchers to Address Impact of Substance Use on Women and Their Families

Deadline to register for the virtual conference is June 17

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — The 12th InWomen’s Conference is set to be held virtually on June 19 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST. It will feature leading and emerging researchers globally in the substance use field discussing issues that affect women, families, LGBT+ individuals, in addition to gender differences, including coping with COVID -19. The conference will highlight innovative approaches to substance misuse, treatment and research impact.

The InWomen’s conference attracts attendees each year from over 30 countries. RTI International is co-sponsoring the conference along with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)/the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW), and other donors.

“Every year I hear with gratitude how we are the only conference with this focus— so by going virtual, we hope to reach an even greater number globally who work in gender and addiction and have an even larger audience,” said Wendee Wechsberg, PhD, InWomen’s Chair, and Director of RTI’s Substance Use, Gender, and Applied Research Program, and the RTI Global Gender Center.

The first panel session will discuss innovative approaches to substance misuse treatment, with a focus on interventions in maternal substance use, adolescent substance use on the U.S.-Mexico border, and psychotherapy and applied exercise used to address comorbid pain and opioid use disorders.

The second panel will address the global impacts of substance use regarding the perceived benefits of substance use in the sex trade in Mexico, social integration of recovering opioid users in Kenya, persons who inject drugs in Pakistan, and HIV transmission among transgender women in Vietnam. There will also be oral poster presentations.

Registration fees for the event have been waived for all attendees. The last day to register is June 17.
