Novel Methods and Tools for High-Resolution Streamflow Forecast Evaluation
RTI Expert: Katie van Werkhoven
RTI will present new methods developed in collaboration with the NOAA National Water Center to detect and evaluate the quality of flood signals in continental scale, high resolution streamflow forecasts from the National Water Model. The scale and coverage of these forecasts create significant potential benefit to enhance community safety across the country, but also present many challenges for use and evaluation.
An Investigation of Methods Used for Spatial Interpolation of Rain Gauge Measurements
RTI Expert: Kyle Chudler
Accurate measurements of precipitation are necessary for a wide variety of meteorological and hydrological purposes. While rain gauges provide the most accurate measurements of precipitation, they only provide data at a single point. For most purposes, it is desirable to have a two-dimensional estimate of precipitation across a broad region. Thus, methods must be established to interpolate point measurements of rainfall at gauge locations to a wider grid in an accurate and scientific way. This study investigates several such methods, and evaluates the performance of each one.
