32nd Annual National Prevention Network Conference

RTI's Phillip W. Graham will provide an NPN keynote on Wednesday, August 28th at the National Prevention Network's annual conference taking place in Chicago, IL from August 27 - August 29. This year's theme is "Building on Evidence-Based Prevention to Connect Communities" and will highlight the latest research in the substance use prevention field. NPN 2019 will provide a forum for prevention professionals, coalition leaders, researchers, and federal partners to share research, best practices and promising evaluation results for the purpose of integrating research into prevention practice. Keynote Presentation

Making the Case for Prevention's Seat at the Table: A Historical and Empirical Perspective

Through the field of prevention science, substance abuse prevention and the implementation of related evidenced-based interventions grew tremendously over the last three decades. Using TED-Talk techniques, this session will weave an empirically-driven narrative of three interrelated topics that will make the case for prevention’s current relevance and future importance.

• Act I (OSAP to CSAP) will discuss the challenge and promise of proving a negative (i.e., proving that prevention strategies stop use before it happens).
• Act II (Keeping our eye on the ball) will present data to frame prevention’s role in addressing this crisis but also discuss the continuing need to address the misuse and abuse of other substances.
• Act III (A seat at the table) will describe what prevention’s seat at the table looks like in practice in the midst of the opioid crisis.

Georgia’s Alcohol Prevention Project (APP) and Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Project (ASAPP) support providers in communities to implement individually targeted and environmental strategy interventions to prevent underage drinking and other substance use. This workshop examines the project's impact on the community and describes barriers and facilitators of intervention implementation.
