This interactive workshop focuses on building authentic relationships between faculty and students through the exploration of cognitive bias and its impact on social and emotional competence. Faulty decision making as a result of cognitive bias manifests itself in classrooms in many ways such as through the communication of low expectations of and for students, inequitable and insufficient academic, social and emotional supports and low student and faculty attendance rates. Strategies to combat these cognitive biases will be discussed with implications for building authentic relationships between students and colleagues.
By the end of the session, participants will
- Understand the benefits and key characteristics of authentic relationships
- Define and discuss cognitive biases that impact relationships
- Practice strategies for building authentic relationships with colleagues and students
