The overdose epidemic continues to have devastating consequences, claiming more than 106,000 lives in the United States in 2021. To adequately respond to the crisis, a multidisciplinary approach focused on limiting substance use initiation—especially among groups at risk for misuse, like adolescents and young adults—is critical. The National Prevention Network (NPN) Conference, taking place this year from August 15-17 in Birmingham, AL, will highlight the latest research in substance use prevention. This year’s conference will feature sessions focused on the theme of “Advancing Prevention Science Through the Lens of Change: How Sweet It Is!”
RTI experts are excited to attend this year’s NPN Conference and network with nearly 1,000 policymakers, prevention providers, and coalition leaders and members, sharing best practices and evaluation results to help integrate research into prevention practice. Mark your calendar for RTI’s presentation on how state prevention systems fund and select evidence-based substance use prevention programs.

State and Jurisdiction Block Grant Administrators’ Descriptions of Their Resources and Decision Making to Support the Adoption of Novel Evidence-Based Substance Misuse Prevention Interventions and Strategies
August 15 | 3:15 – 4:30 PM CDT
Presenters: Elvira Elek, PhD, Amy Goldstein, PhD (National Institute on Drug Abuse), Shirley Liu, BS, Sarah Mariani, BA (Washington State Department of Social and Health Services), Donna Dent, MS (Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities)
The magnitude of the ongoing overdose crisis combined with few established evidence-based opioid misuse prevention interventions creates an urgency for the development, adoption, and scale-up of novel strategies. However, evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often take a decade or more to achieve wide-scale dissemination; most never achieve this. Facilitating the adoption of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder prevention interventions requires understanding how state prevention systems function and what factors influence adoption of new EBIs.
In this session, Dr. Elek and Ms. Liu will present findings of a survey of 55 state and jurisdiction administrators of Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant funds to better understand their prevention infrastructure and intervention adoption decisions. The session will also provide the perspective of two state prevention systems—Washington and Georgia—on the resources they use to support substance misuse prevention and how they and their prevention providers make decisions about implementing specific EBIs.
A 20-year Legacy of Workplace Innovations: Deborah Galvin’s Contribution to Preventing Substance Misuse
