Dr. Shaojun “Jim” Zhou and Dr. Paul Mobley will be traveling to Melbourne, Australia to attend the Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies Conference (GHGT14). Dr. Zhou, Director of Gas Separations, will be presenting on October 23^rd, 2019 during Session 4A – Amine Pilot Plants on RTI's Pilot Testing of a Non-Aqueous Solvent (NAS) CO2 Capture Process. In mid-2018, RTI won a Department of Energy funded 2-1/2 year collaborative project to advance its non-aqueous solvent (NAS)-based CO₂ capture technology for post-combustion CO₂ capture at coal-fired power plants. Using the existing large-scale pilot infrastructure of one of its’ partners at the Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) in Norway, RTI will test both materials and processes. Tests will demonstrate the scalability and commercial potential of RTI’s NAS technology for CO₂ capture.

The key performance feature of the RTI NAS process is its low solvent regeneration energy requirement, which leads to substantially lower CO₂ capture costs when compared with conventional, state-of-the-art aqueous amine-based post combustion CO₂ capture (PCCC) technologies. Initial tests show that energy savings for CO₂ capture using the NAS technology would be more than 40%.  Reduced CO₂ emissions result in reduced energy costs, one of the most important factors to meet the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) 30% cost reduction goal for electricity generated at new coal-fired power plants with CO₂ capture by 2030.

Background of Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies Conference

The Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT) conference series was formed in 1997 following the merger of the earlier series of ICCDR and the Greenhouse Gas: Mitigation options conference. The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG) is the guardian of the conference series. The GHGT conferences are held every two years in IEAGHG's member countries. The conference series rotates between North America, Europe and Asia The GHGT conference series has established itself as the principal international conference on greenhouse gas mitigation technologies especially on CCS (CO2 Capture and Storage). Each conference will be a forum for technical discussions related to the field of greenhouse gas control technology.  This field can be defined, broadly, as technologies that allow us to continue using our large fossil energy reserves while reducing their associated greenhouse gas emissions.
