Enhanced Opportunities for RTI Fellows

The RTI Fellow Program offers numerous benefits to participants. In addition to the distinction of being recognized as a scientific leader, RTI gives its Fellows freedom, as well as sufficient time and financial support, to

  • Identify and pursue research projects in their areas of expertise
  • Pursue opportunities for enhancing personal and institutional scientific stature through publications, patents, technical presentations, seminars, and other professional activities
  • Advise on and advocate for science at RTI

With RTI financial support, Fellows conduct research of their own choosing. They describe their proposed research in annual work plans, approved by the leadership of their organizational units. Unit leadership and the Vice President of Operations also approve annual budgets that support these work plans.

In general terms, RTI provides the following levels of recurring financial support as a proportion of annual salary:

  • Distinguished Fellow: 35 percent
  • Senior Fellow: 30 percent
  • Fellow: 25 percent

In addition, RTI provides funds to support approved costs, such as equipment to accomplish the objectives of the work plan, travel to professional meetings to represent the RTI Fellow Program, and costs for other staff members to carry out RTI-wide activities within the purview of the program. As is the case for senior management, compensation and other incentives for RTI Fellows are aligned with performance.
