Jessica Thompson has over 20 years of experience conducting behavioral research for studies funded by the US Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and American Cancer Society. Her areas of interest include health decision making, health and risk communication, measurement of patient-reported outcomes and attitudes, survey development, and systematic literature reviews, with a focus on cancer and prescription drugs.

Dr. Thompson is a Co-Investigator for the INSPIRE trial: Integrated Services for Pain—Interventions to Reduce Pain Effectively. This PCORI-funded study is a multi-site, pragmatic trial to test two behavioral programs for reducing opioids and improving function use among pain patients. As part of this trail, she led or contributed to: survey development, implementation of a shared decision-making intervention, fidelity assessment, patient-partner engagement efforts, reporting, publication, and other dissemination activities.

Dr. Thompson has also worked extensively in the area of communicating scientific information to lay audiences and has led several experimental studies for the FDA on patient and healthcare provider perceptions of prescription drug promotion.

In addition to her work in prescription drugs, Dr. Thompson has extensive experience working in cancer-related decision-making, psycho-oncology and survivorship issues.
