2023 International Emissions Inventory Conference

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2023 International Emissions Inventory Conference (IEIC) will bring together researchers, students, international communities and organizations whose range of work supports emissions inventory development. Taking place September 26-29 in Seattle, this year’s conference will explore topics under the theme, “The Nexus of Climate, Air Quality, and Health: Smoke and Other Emissions Challenges.”

We’re excited to attend this year’s conference, including expert Libby Robinson participating as a speaker for the session on greenhouse gases, including methane and black carbon. Disaggregation Approaches in State-Level GHG Emission Inventory Development for Industrial Sectors

To complement the national Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, the U.S. EPA in 2022 published its first state-level inventory for 1990-2019. During development of the state-level greenhouse gas (GHG) estimates consistent with the national Inventory, the EPA applied the methodology used to compile national-level estimates. From this starting point, three approaches were taken to determine state-level estimates.

In this presentation, we will discuss the three approaches as applied to 20 sources within the Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) sector, including industries in the chemicals, metals, and minerals sectors. A specific focus will be placed on how facility-level data obtained for the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program from 2010-2020 was used to develop state-level estimates, and efforts to identify data sources and surrogates to estimate state-level GHG emissions for 1990-2009.
