Forty-three staff members recognized during 2024 Patent Awards luncheon
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – RTI International, a nonprofit institute, hosted its seventh Patent Awards luncheon on March 27. The event honored 43 inventors across four business units at RTI who were named on 71 U.S. patents granted between 2019 and 2023.
“It’s an honor to work with this passionate group of individuals working tirelessly to make an impact in the world,” said RTI’s Vice President of Intellectual Property and Licensing Dean Woodward. “These inventors demonstrated their commitment to identifying and creating innovative solutions to help improve the human condition.”
The path from invention disclosure to granted U.S. patent is a long one, often taking four years or more from when an invention is first filed with the Patent Office. Inventors must prove to patent examiners that their invention is useful, novel and not obvious at the time it was filed. Through an iterative process, applications are challenged by a combination of patent and non-patent literature to determine whether the application satisfies the regulatory standards for patent allowance.
RTI obtains patents in such fields as pharmaceuticals, energy and medical devices to enable licensees to invest in further development to bring RTI inventions to the market. Patenting at RTI is therefore a chance to join the legacy of great inventors while also delivering the promise of science for global good.
The patents celebrated at the luncheon comprised new therapeutic compounds for various medical conditions, sensors and devices for measuring environmental exposure, biomedical devices, carbon capture solvents and related process technologies, and inventions related to energy, forensics and justice, novel materials and sanitation.
